Sažetak:A superior film decathlete: Exceptionally hornored during his extensive career as a cinematographer, director and pedagogue, Nikola Tanhofer united, in his personality, multiple talents and a multi-faceted film professinoalism. He maintained a lasting intellectual curiosity toward film, whish drove him to solve technical and other hidden secrets of the medium. Led by his passion for exploring the technical possiblities of the medium, he, for the first time in Croatian film, used rear projection ('Sinji Galeb', B. Bauer, 1953), special effects photography of models to simulate a bus and truck collision in his film 'H-8' (1958), and the process of flashing ('The Key', Vrdoljak, 1965). As one of the best Croatian cinematographes, Tanhofer showed a tendency toward a modern lapidary expression in his camera and directorial work, as well as a desire for a rhythmically expressive series of lively shots and sequences. He began working as a cinematographer in 1949 ('The Flag', B. Marjanović, for which he received the People's Republic of Croatia Award), and continued to work as a director of photography in several other memorable films: 'Blue 9' (K. Golik 1950), 'Sinji Galeb' (B. Bauer, 1953), 'Ciguli Miguli' (1952), and 'The Siege' (B. Marjanović 1956). After these films he tried his hand at directing with 'It Was Not in Vain' (1957), 'Klempo' (1958), 'H-8' (1958), 'The Eight Door' (1959), 'Happiness Comes at Nine' (1961), 'Double Ring' (1963), 'The Drawning' (1964), and 'Indian Summer' (1970). Among these films, 'H-8' is looked upon with particular distinction as a result of the positive shock it gave audiences at the Pula Film Festival (it received every important festival award) since it signified a true turning point as a film with a modern theme realized at the level of the best european films of that time before the appearance of the New Wave. However, the most valuable legacy left by Tanhofer to Croatian film is the result of his extensive teaching work. From the inception of the cinematography department at the Academy of Dramatic Arts in 1969, Tanhofer has, over the course of almost three decades, educated over one hundred cinematographers, who have contributed to the visual essence of Croatian film (and television). Another part of his pedagogical work is his comprehensive book 'Film Photography' (1977), which has achieved cult status as a fundamental text for anyone who wishes to think in or express themselves in moving images.

Sažetak:Profession - war cameraman: The cameraman's profession harbors many dangers, and the war cameraman is particulary susceptible to them. In order to stay alive in such a dangerous profession and obtain good material, it is advisable to observe the following rules: 1. Being shooting only when there is something really interesting in your frame. 2. You should get as close as possible to the action. 3. You should begin recording with an establishing shot and only then should you concentrate oon the details. 4. Before moviing the camera you should shoot several seconds of stationary material. 5. War news is not a rock video so you should try to avoid zooming. 6. The beginning and end of the shot have to be filled woth unambiguous and interesting content whish should be joined with calm and precise movement. 7. As the rule, shooting with a telephoto lens can only be done correctly by usiing a tripped whish can be improvised by placing the camera on ahy other type of support. 8. Shooting from a moving vehicle will only be correct if the lens is set in its widest position. 9. When shooting while walking or running, it is better to walk or too run behind someone who is also walking or running in the foreground of the shoot. 10. One shouldn't be apprehensive about shooting in law light, at dawn of sunset of in the rain, since these shots will be rich with atmosphere. 11. When shooting in a closed space, te best place to shoot from is the entrance to the space. 12. Don't risk your life unnecessarily. There is no shot worth your life!

Sažetak:A nostalgic shooting script from 1945 of How I got my feet wet for the first time: the text is a nostalgic autobiographical recollection written for this magazie by distinguished univerity professor, director an cinematographer Nikola Tanhofer just before his death. In a refined literary style, the author presents us with the first day of his first professional location assignment - a propaganda film in a village near Zagreb. The event triggers - in the manner of cinematic flashbacks - scrapf of personal memories of his family, events from his childhood, his high school graduation, his "initiation" into the communist party, his first cinema-related job on the Film Boart (the first central cinematic organization in the newly established socialist state), and smoe of his memorable cinema-viewing experiences. Interspersed with these recollections of wvents are a series of vivid portraits of different people, among whom are important personalities of the Croatian cinema.
